A SICKLE CELL CONSORTIUM INITITATIVE

"Project Smile is a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to restoring confidence, dignity, and smiles to adults living with sickle cell disease by addressing one of the most overlooked aspects of their care: oral health.

Sickle cell warriors often experience devastating dental complications caused by their condition, a lack of insurance coverage, systemic medical bias, and limited access to informed care. For many, the pain is constant, and the shame of dental loss deeply impacts their self-esteem, employment opportunities, and overall quality of life.  Through education, awareness, and life-changing dental treatment, Project Smile is determined to change that.

As part of our preliminary research, we’ve conducted a national survey of sickle cell warriors and caregivers and the early results are clear. With over 80 responses collected so far, the data reveals a major unmet need for intervention and access to dental care, highlighting how widespread and urgent this issue is.
