COMMUNITY CONSORTIUM

Welcome To
The Faith Based Initiative
This toolkit was created with faith-based organizations in mind, recognizing the vital role spirituality plays in our communities. Faith institutions are trusted spaces with the power to influence health outcomes, especially in communities of color.
Sickle cell disease is a serious public health issue that disproportionately affects Black and Hispanic populations. While often misunderstood and rarely discussed, it deeply impacts quality of life. Beyond physical symptoms, the disease brings emotional, social, and mental health challenges.
Unlike most resources, this toolkit focuses on the psychosocial and mental health aspects of sickle cell disease. It serves as a call to action for faith leaders to take a more active role in health ministry and support individuals and families affected by this condition.
Inspired by my own family’s journey with sickle cell disease, this toolkit aims to bridge the gap between faith and health. By using it, spiritual leaders can better understand, support, and uplift those living with chronic and rare illnesses in their congregations.
We believe this resource can spark meaningful change and strengthen the role of faith communities in health outreach. Thank you for embracing this effort.
